If hiking gas prices 3 fold (with more increases to follow) to bring gas prices close to world prices can be done in the ukraine without riots in the street and "alternative sources of european energy" (optimistically read as Linc UCG project in Poland and Hungary)

Russia convinced Yakunovich (previous president of Ukraine) that super cheap gas was a better deal than EU association could offer.  We are about to find out if the Ukraine people really agree.  Ukraine UCG is pretty much dead for now IMO because all of the coal is in the east rebel held areas.

But the west seems intent on moving the western Ukraine into an EU energy integration at normal market prices.
