Young Sydneysiders turned off by ‘dirty’ careers because they’re not fashionable enough

THOUSANDS of young Sydneysiders are turning up their noses at potentially lucrative careers in so-called dirty jobs such as plumbing and bricklaying because they are not seen as fashionable choices.
Youth unemployment rates in parts of NSW are higher than 20 per cent, yet some employers battle to fill jobs with workers they desperately need because youngsters “don’t want to get their hands dirty”.
More than 90,000 people in NSW aged between 15-24 were unemployed in February, including more than 51,000 in greater Sydney, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals.

WOULD YOU MOVE TO DUBBO TO GET A JOB?

And Australian Vocational Education and Training statistics showed apprenticeships had fallen by 18 per cent nationally from September 2013 to September 2014. In NSW, the number of apprenticeship starts dropped by 28 per cent.

Group Training Association of NSW chief executive Naomi Dinnen said some teenagers were picky about trades.
“We find with trades like electricians a lot want to apply because they hear the money is so good,” she said.
“But they don’t understand (that) laying bricks you can make a real go of it, eventually run your own business and make significant money.”
