I am not sure that spending on flights is as discretionary as what everyone makes it out to be. It does not disappear at the troughs of the cycle, it merely gets compressed and deferred. Further, nominal expenditure for flights and travel is getting smaller and smaller as a percentage of disposable income. It is no longer a big ticket item like buying a car.
