morning all, hi vertigo,
re. "What is crazy about living close to where most people spend most of their day travelling to and from - work?"
then
"When I say close I mean less than an hour on public transport."
well, lets have a little look at the calcs.
There are 260 working days a year. Lets go with your max. of 1 hour travel - so that's 2 hours a day.
260 X 2 = 520 hours travel a year.
Many work from say age 20 to age 65 - that's 45 years
so - 45 years X 520 hours per year = 23,400 work travel hours in one's lifetime.
In real 24 hour days that is 23,400 / 24 = 975 days (full days)
that's 2.67 years ------------- full day years ---------- spent in a silver bullet shooting past graffiti walled slums full of dero's.
And, we do this by choice?
Lets make those days more realistic - like, if we were going out for a day - we would more than likely measure that day in something like 10 hours - eg. go to the beach at 8 am and return at 6 pm -- lets do those calcs.
23,400 / 10(hours in a nice day) = 2,340 - then divide by 365 days =
6.4 Years.
So - we live in a major city - we pay between say half a million dollars and a million dollars for the privilege - and we have to go to work to pay for it and we spend
somewhere between 2.67 years and 6.4 years of our entire lives travelling on a train to get to that work.
Now ------------------ honestly - does that sound sane to you?
IMO the young people in Australia need to look around - and, they will find that all over the country - people actually exist ----------- no one starves, people do more or less the same things - they have friends, they have a drink, the dance, they watch sports - etc. etc. etc.
But, not everyone has the insanity of living in crap holes that cost so so so much money - and have to have huge mortgages to support it and hence NEED to be near the middle of the city and have to WASTE years and years of their lives travelling on public transport through dirty air and polluted areas --------------- many of them to jobs they would NOT choose if they didn't have to fund their huge mortgages.
IMO -------------------- it is complete insanity.
