Would you have preferred that hiter's national socialists (nazis) one WW2 and their Japanese allies in the pacific invaded and took over control of Australia along with the rest of Asia...

Of course once you have built a massive industial-military-economic-national security complex within the state, it is almost impossible to dismantle it and eventually everything starts to look like a nail to this massive and hugely important (profitable to many) hammer...
