I guess the same goes for ASIO (Oh Hai spooks! ). I wonder who will go to jail for this breach of the law? (He asked knowing full well the answer is 'nobody', they'll just rewrite the laws and make them retroactive to suit themselves.)
US Court Rules NSA Phone Data Collection Illegal
ABC News reports that the United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the laws relied on by the National Security Agency (NSA) for its mass collection of telephone data "have never been interpreted to authorise anything approaching the breadth of the sweeping surveillance at issue here". The Court reportedly stated that "[t]here is no evidence that Congress intended for those statutes to authorise the bulk collection of every American's toll billing or educational records and to aggregate them into a database", adding that "[t]he interpretation that the government [requested the Court adopt] defies any limiting principle".
