The University of California system is actually a series of individual universities funded by the state of California. [A UC Davis degree is not the same as a UC Berkeley degree.]

Do you know how much they spend?

Universities always need far more money for research than they can raise. $100K can pay the salary of a postdoc for a year. $10K can buy some equipment. $1K can pay for an airfare to a conference.
