The science to date suggests that that is a very real possibility, but the real problem is that we don't know and have absolutely no way of knowing. The interesting thing is that taking control of the world as we know it and making countless jobs obsolete is actually the least of our worries, and people like Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk are already warning about the possible fall-out. The real concern is what happens when AI continues to optimise and preserve itself.
