Slider, interesting that you should quote these lyrics.
IMO while they are somewhat obscure in places, they are nevertheless profound and overall, depressing. The song is now 45 years old, but I really think it marks the spot in time when life started to take on a much less rosy hue for white Americans..
Black African Americans never had it good, so it doesn't apply to them.
The song is absolutely topical for now.
I see many signs of the disconnectedness of ordinary people, which has progressed since McLean's song was penned. Today, Escapism has reached its zenith, institutional violence is entrenched and there is cynicism and anger on the streets. US cities have repeatedly burned over the decades since Kennedy's assassination, without any signs of social renewal.
The MSM censures important news about banks criminality, even here on commercial radio in Australia.
People immerse themselves vicariously in the trivia of show biz personalities, at the expense of constructively enriching their lives. It's like tens of millions of people have been lobotomised.
    23.
