Background radiation is now well above natural levels.
Radiation is a known carcinogen. We can only handle so much before the DNA becomes irreparably damaged and this damage can be replicated down the ensuing generations in younger survivors.
The Pacific Ocean is so affected by the ongoing Fukushima disaster that there have been reports of a mass die off of mammal and fish life with many carcasses washing up onto the West coast of the US. Something like 600 tons a day of radioactive waste water from Fukushima is poured into the ocean with no exit plan in place. Fukushima is many times worse than Chernobyl in Ukraine ever was and the effects will be felt for a long, long time.
I'm sorry your wife suffered so badly from cancer. I've been there and survived, but guess what it, occurred right where a radiation beam was directed at the age of 4 or 5, back in the days when doctors used radiation for purposes other than cancer treatment. Some people lost fingers post radiation for warts back then. 1950's medicine...
