    I can't quote references, but just in the last few months newspapers here and elsewhere published the stats of results where people were asked to pray for hospital patients.

    The results were clear cut.

    Where the patient didn't know they were being prayed for, there was no difference to the control group.

    Where the the patient did know, their outcome was worse than the control group. This is probably due to the stress of expecting to "perform".

    We all know that prayer doesn't work unless you count "now and then" which is just random chance.

    Why do people cling to these superstitions?
