Sendai 1 Could Restart by Mid-July
May 21, 2015—Japan’s Kyushu Electric Power Co. hopes it can resume operating its 890-megawatt Sendai 1 the week of July 19. Kyushu EPC has asked Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority to complete pre-operational inspections of equipment and fuel loading by June 12. The inspections began March 30.
Both dates are a week later than originally proposed, which the NRA called “unrealistic,” though inspectors said they would try to meet Kyushu’s proposed fuel loading timeline.
All of Japan’s 43 operable power reactors have been idled since September 2013, pending NRA’s confirmation of reactor systems’ compliance with revised post-Fukushima safety requirements that came into force July 2013.
NRA Approves Restart of Ikata 3
May 21, 2015—Japan’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority has approved the restart of Shikoku Electric Power Co.’s Ikata 3 nuclear power reactor in Ehime prefecture in southern Japan. The NRA draft report said the 846-megawatt pressurized water reactor unit conforms with its new post-Fukushima safety standards.
The NRA also said it will move to the next step of the restart procedure—public consultation on the draft report—before publishing the final version of its decision. Ikata 3 is expected to restart by the end of 2015.
NRA to Look at Takahama 1, 2 Lifetime Extensions; Restart of Reactors 3, 4 Still on Hold
May 21, 2015—The NRA is to begin examinations that could lead to extended operating lifetimes for Kansai Electric Power Co.’s Takahama 1 and 2 nuclear reactors in Fukui prefecture. The inspections are to be carried out at the same time as inspections of the reactor’s compliance with post-Fukushima regulatory standards. Both reactors are 780-megawatt pressurized water reactors.
Meanwhile, Fukui District Court refused to consider Kansai EPC’s petition to overturn a different judge’s provisional injunction against the restart of Takahama 3 and 4. The court is expected to open an inquiry into the appeal.
