This is why privatization of essential infrastructure (the grid, the phone network etc.) is so godawfully stupid. It's perfectly reasonable for a government-owned organization to forego profits and wind down gracefully in favour of a disruptive new technology (solar/storage, the real NBN) if it's in the best interests of the country. A private company, on the other hand, is legally obliged to protect its shareholders' profits by fighting tooth and nail to maintain its dominance, holding back the progress of competition as long as it possibly can.

You're right, the government now needs to buy all the infrastructure back so that it can absorb the loss as the changes take place. Otherwise it will be chaos and the cost will be far greater for the community.
