Canada approves Paladin as uranium mine's majority owner
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - The Canadian government has approved an application by Australia's Paladin Energy Ltd PDN.AX for majority ownership of its proposed uranium mine in the Atlantic province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canadian Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford said on Monday.
Canada requires operating uranium mines to have majority ownership by Canadian companies or investors, but makes an exception when Canadian partners cannot be found, something that Paladin demonstrated for its Michelin project, the minister said in a release.
Weak uranium prices have caused several major producers, including Canada's Cameco Corp CCO.TO, to cut costs.
