A while ago I wrote that Abbotts hatred of wind may work for Silex. On the efficiency angle, the big competitors for solar, wind and hydro are very mature technologies and one cannot for see any improvement in efficiencies. Turbine design in both wind and water has long been studied and improved on. Not so with solar, plenty of room for improvement hence it is likely to advance more than others. I have just read (Climate Spectator) that the Collinsville solar farm ( not Silex I assume) is back on the agenda due to surety in the RET, so should we also expect a Mildura update???
On efficiencies, the solar towers using molten salts are thermally very efficient, probably above 80%, the trouble is that they use a normal steam cycle to generate electricity, maximum efficiency around 45%. Cycle efficiency around 36% at the very best. A CPV array would require less land per kW.Hr, but the solar towers do have an inherent energy storage capability. Battery advances both in cost and efficiency mean IMO that CPV is, or will be, the preferred concentrated solar.
