This article (part of) appeared on intelligent investor 22/1/13. The costs with deposit being "upside down" is that
still an issue for MBN?
"Santa Rita is the largest new sulphide nickel mines discovered anywhere over the past decade and yet the company has struggled. High grade zones of the deposit are buried beneath low grade sections of ore – the deposit is upside down. Operating an open pit mine, the company has to dig through plenty of unprofitable low grade material before hitting the good stuff in the years ahead.
To illustrate the importance of grade, Western Areas extracts nickel ores grading 5% while Mirabela mines a miserly 0.5%. Costs for the two miners consequently diverge with Western Areas producing nickel at less than $3 a pound while Mirabela’s operating costs are closer to $8."
