    Waffle, I think this is a confusing point.
    On a long time scale, evolution may appear linear , but on a short timeframe, there would be more hit and miss visible.

    Evolution is confusing because it is happening right now, but until we look back a long way, we do not see the trends.

    I feel creationists have difficulty here, for example the evolution of the eye.
    It may seem impossible to have evolved without a creator, but over a long time scale it can be explained by science via fossils.
