In Russia, they have developed a drug called Krokodil (or desomorphine), which is backyard created by mixing over-the-counter pain medications with ethanol, petrol, red phosphorous, iodine, hydrochloric acid and paint thinner and warming it up a bit. It can be produced very cheaply, and was used in Russia when heroin was hard to get.
The drug causes scaly patches to erupt on the skin, abcesses and horrible death usually within a year.

People seek out drugs because they want to use them in most cases.
