Fair point, but technology development pipelines are long and players want to gain control of a promising new technologies well before the existing technology hits the straps.
New players who do not have a pre-existing stake in the established technologies would not hesistate to acquire a disruptive technology if they thought they could usurp the incumbents and take over their market share.
And, similarly, established players would not hesistate to acquire control of an emerging / better technology and lock it away if they thought that action would protect their existing investment.
