I'd also like to add that as pets become more and more 'humanized' the more they will require medication and become sensitive to particular things. My parents got a puppy recently and the list of things that are harmful is getting out of control. We've had it a month and it's been to the vet twice.
Back in their day dogs were much stronger, they would eat anything and vets were a rarity. Also, now that pets are 'humanized' it's not as uncommon as you'd think to see a dog go through chemotherapy - my neighbours spent $50,000 on medical needs for their dog.
