Not sure if he could avoid a leadership challenge doing that but IMO there would be a big revolt from all those that would lose there seats and every one else. Big lose for every one, can't see that happening.
Yes general consensuses is that Turnbull or any leadership change needs to happen this year.
I don't underestimate the challenges Turnbull faces, so far he is handling the fellow MP issues well by not having blood on his hands.
Turnbull is a smart man, I would not be surprised if he has ideas and plans to take forward.
I would not be surprised if he and Morrison have been working on it, Morrison no doubt has leadership ambitions and it would work for him to back Turnbull with the view of taking over from Turnbull.
