As others have suggested the easiest way to participate in the stock market is via a consumer based platform like ETrade of Commsec which you can easily sign up for.
But firstly you need to know what it is you want to achieve, what are your objectives? What is your goal in 1, 5, 10 years? Do you want to build a long term portfolio? Or income out of day / ST trading? Are you after a quick buck / gamble? Will you be using cash? Borrowed money? Is it money you depend on in the short / medium term? Etc.. It is different for everybody and only you know your situation best.
Best to speak to a qualified financial adviser before you start if you need some investment / trading advice going forward.
