So they have been open - does that make what they do right or any better than the US?
For all the meddling that everyone pins on the US, Russia is at least as bad, if not worse. The Syria mess - the hundreds of thousands killed under Assad 1 & 2 have been supported by Russia and Iran who are there for different reasons, but share their pivotal and strategic motivations.
Look at a map of the Middle East.
Russia, by virtue of Iranian support, have access right through to the Mediterranean Sea (and you can forget the Azerbaijanian speed bump in between Russia and Iran).

Iran, with their Iraqi and Syrian Proxies, are seizing on a Shiite bloc right through to the Mediterranean. Further, courtesy of Hezbollah, they have Lebanon in their sights, but the postage stamp of Israel causes them a headache in a potential expansion of their Shiite Caliphate right down through to Egypt.
The refugee exodus (of mainly Sunnis) out of Syria plays into Iran's hands by decreasing the Sunni majority in Syria that they have to contend with. The refugee exodus to Europe also plays into Russia's hands as a weakened Europe automatically gives Putin the upper-hand in the region.

Would you prefer the current situation continue?
My point is, the US meddling in conflicts they should stay out of!
If it was purely on humanitarian grounds, great, but its not!
The US are actively continuing this conflict for their own interests!
