So Lihir can make an additional $3,000,000/yr by selling carbon credits? Tell me they're joking.
Mining is an environmentally unfriendly game to start with using a lot of energy to find, dig up and process the ore. Why does a company that can reduce their dependency on fossil fuel gain carbon credits? This only means that they use less fossil fuel. It won't save the world environment.
What's worse is that it is mainly gold that is dug up. It is then hoarded as bullion or made into jewelry - a useless purpose.
The world of carbon credits is a strange place.
