If i were a doctor i would want to look inside the patient to clarify any issues that maybe causing any pain or discomfort, the 4 corners report has said that nearly all lower back pain and knee scans are not required. What if there is a tumour in the lower back but the doctor prescribed medication (Panadol) first without the clarity that a scan gives, two or three months go by and the tumour becomes inoperable and the patient dies. Even though the majority of cases for back pain and knee pain are the cause of people getting older you can't rule out anything more serious. Just imagine the payout for a wrong diagnosis that could have been treated by viewing the appropriate scan or image. I would suggest that a $400 dollar scan is much cheaper than a $1,000,000 payout to the family of the deceased through incorrect diagnosis. Even though there could be financial waste from GPs requesting scans from diagnostic imaging companies, it is financial waste that could be saving lives.
