The community group Coal and CSG Free Mirboo North says it has more questions than answers after meeting with a mining company about its plans for the Latrobe Valley area.

The Victorian Government granted Mantle Mining a coal exploration licence in June.

About 200 community members met the company on Sunday night to discuss the proposal.

However, a spokeswoman for the group, Marg Thomas, said the meeting made the situation more murky.

"Their story was that they would explore coal, they would extract coal and use that money to build a solar-pumped hydro scheme in the Latrobe Valley. That was really difficult to understand," she said.

"There was a strong sense in that they found Mantle Mining's intentions or proposals unbelievable and the other aspect that arose was that these licences can be onsold at any time and so any promises that were made won't necessarily be honoured."

The ABC has contacted Mantle Mining for comment.
