El Nino will be a "substantial event", rivalling the record-breaking El Nino of 1997
For Territorians attempting to remain calm in the face of little or no rainfall between now and January, a statement by NASA climatologist Bill Patzert describing the coming event shaping up as the "Godzilla El Nino" would not have helped.
The forecast has rural Australia, already reeling from consecutive failed crops, bracing for "another kick in the teeth", according to rural counselling service head Karen Tully.
Australian and international experts are on record as warning the coming El Nino will be a "substantial event", rivalling the record-breaking El Nino of 1997 which brought serious drought to many parts of the Western Pacific.
"This kind of extreme El Nino event normally lasts until April, May," Wenju Cai, research scientist with CSIRO, told the ABC.
