GPS certainly have their problems. I think, at my age, I'll probably be a die-hard self driver! I love driving, and I don't use GPS either. As a side note, my daughter's car was hit when someone cut across it after his GPS told him to turn right. So for some people it should be compulsory.
There will have to be safety procedures if the connection drops out, surely, when the car just stops. Which doesn't sound very safe .....
