It was announced today that Lafayette Mining Limited, an Australian company, has had to pay a fine of AUS$264,840 imposed by the Philippines, after two spills last year at their zinc and copper mines near Manila.
After the spills, the Philippines government ordered the company to run tests throughout the mine to sure they have complied with 15 set conditions, before it was allowed to be reopened and fully functioning again.
Lafayette is the first foreign company to develop and run a mine in the Philippines in close to 40 years, and predicts that once the mine is reopened, it will generate revenues of US$350 million annually.
