re: gst registration I am a retailer, GST registered and make my qtrly BAS payments.
But I would be amazed if I could deduct the GST paid on brokerage from the GST collected on my supplies. (I only claim to be an investor, not trader) My accountant would be amazed too. LOL And the $50k threshold, is that $50k of brokerage or stock traded? Howard went to some lengths to ensure we paid this tax and it stayed paid.
Similarly, I built an investment property early 2000 and I never had a clear understanding if I would have to pay GST if I on-sold it within 5yrs. That house was not part of my enterprise and therefore I was NOT GST registered wrt to that property.
If anyone is confused on this, they have every right to be.
