Norwood Systems has launched its World Phone on Android for Australian Android users, matching the iOS app capabilities iPhone owners have now enjoyed for four months.
Australian Android users now have access to the seamless and affordable international roaming that Norwood’s World Phone app provides.
Launched in late July for iOS users (see full launch video here), Norwood boasts that the demand for its ‘award-winning app is exceeding all expectations.’
The company proudly proclaims that World Phone ‘is already the #1 downloaded Travel App in 109 of 155 App Store countries and has customers in 5,100 cities, across 205 countries.’
Norwood Systems says it is ‘offering Australian business travellers and consumers who need to call overseas a new option, one that does not compromise quality of service over affordability.’
Australian-born entrepreneur, Paul Ostergaard, is the founder of the world’s first global ‘shared economy’ telco platform, as previously described at iTWire here.
Ostergaard says he has ‘a vision to deliver high-quality, low-cost voice telecommunications services at any time worldwide,’ and that with approximately 1.4 billion Android users worldwide, World Phone’s launch on Android ‘is a significant milestone in achieving this vision.’
Ostergaard added: “We have a truly unique offering in the World Phone app and, at the heart of it, we are able to provide Australian and global users an affordable yet high performing service in now more than 70 countries worldwide.”
Norwood Systems says it is ‘disrupting the existing telecommunication market by utilising the sharing economy with its first of its kind World Phone app. By tapping into the sharing economy, World Phone users spend minimal time on unreliable internet connections through using local fixed line infrastructure for the majority of their calls.’
More below include very high initial Android download figures - please read on!
World Phone is now available for download in the ‘travel and local’ category on the Google Play app store, with Norwood proudly boasting of over one million iOS version downloads and now sharing the new figures of an initial Android download number exceeding 250,000 over a 3-day test market period and global launch window.
“We want to bring low-cost international calling closer for everyone by making the most of global networks that have capacity available for use, which is the same sharing economy concept that we are seeing disrupt other industries. We want to give our customers more choice to connect globally, locally,” Ostergaard concluded.
