Yes really nickbou, but it is demographic specific, it is most prevalent in stores with a low to mid socio economic demographic and naturally a Aldi would be required within the immediate vicinity. I am not here as part of any conspiracy theory by WES and it is rather comical to read as such and for the record I was a department manager for Woolies/Safeway for 14 years. Feel free to ask any Woolies department and or store manager if what I have stated is credible and come back to me if you like. I think WOW is a great buy at the moment. As for sujmano's comment on staff buying specials in Woolworths stores that is nothing new and when I was around it was 5% discount and still is I believe. I am still in close contact with many store, department managers and floor staff and hail many as life long friends. The whole WOW being the dominant retailer has come and gone. It may come back again with great senior management but not anytime soon, takes a long time to swing a boat that big around.
In my opinion I believe senior management did not take the threat of Aldi as seriously as they should have, coupled with Coles big push on price perception, the Masters saga, WOW really got clobbered. I do recall when Franklins Big Fresh came onto the scene many years ago and Woolworths took that very seriously and price matched, undercut and really went for the jugular and Franklins pretty much shut up shop under a decade later, testament to Roger Corbett's leadership and vision at the time.
