I thought you'd have been able to work this out.
The US economy is an $18 trillion p.a. economy, the amount of gold they own compared to GDP is so minuscule, Americans, with a few oddball exceptions like Ron Paul don't care about it, because in the big picture it's worth lots less than the latest fleet of fighters for the USAF.
They own it because it's traditional, they've owned it since 1933 when they melted down the gold they confiscated and it's been there ever since.
Maybe it'll go into a museum someday, like the Constitution or an Apollo capsule.
