It doesn't matter about the size of the sell side vs the buy side. If you have 10 million people willing to buy a packet of noodles at no more than $5, and one person owning the only packet of noodles who won't sell it for less than $6, you still won't have a trade. The Share Price reflects the price of latest trade that has occurred on the market.
They are calling you stupid because its a very fundamental piece of knowledge for anyone who has even the tips of their toes in the economic/financial sector.
You're no stupid, just ignorant. No shame in ignorance, everyone starts out knowing nothing. It's good that you asked, you probably saved yourself quite a bit of money. IMO you should get a bit of economics training/studying, even on Investopedia, and then observing the markets for a couple of years everyday before you start investing money for real. Remember to note that all world events are interconnected and have influnces/are influenced by the stock market. Good luck
