They need money in the door, and to do it quickly for once.
Perhaps buy Carbon Revolution's proven wheel IP and ramp up capacity by pooling their production tech?
Rims are a lot more standardised than bespoke car parts, can be made for the aftermarket as well as OEMs to remove contract lead times, and currently just aren't available in high volumes or at reasonable prices.
Oh, and carbon rides much better than Al-alloy!
