We did it quite successfully for 4 years before I left. Using fresian Bulls with sexed semen is fine as the heifer calves are smaller than Bulls, you can make it easier again buy using a bull that has a lower birth weight. making sure the heifers are big enough is more important. To many times I've seen farmers not care about the heifers properly until they're in the milking herd.

As I said we did it for 4 years with over 90% heifers with maybe 1-2% have any problems calving or the calf died (we had 200 heifers each year)

Having the correct nutritional program setup around the time the cows are cycling and making sure you get them at the right time. On our farm we had activity meters on the cows collars and could generally tell from the computer when the cow was in heat by paring that with a drop in milk and scratch patches on top of the tail.

I agree it does cost a little more but spending that money on a cow that's going to (potentially) give you 100,000+ litres over her life it's a great investment. Sadly many farmers aren't very good businessmen or investors.
