Just seen that Rio recently has given green light to a new bauxite project adjacent to MLM's/Oresome's bauxite project. Planned capacity: 22.8 Mt/a (!) CapEx: 1.9 Bio USD (!). See
http://www.riotinto.com/documents/Amrun_project_fact_sheet.pdf
What does that mean for the MLM/Oresome project (capacity: 1-2 Mt/a)? Just my thoughts (DYOR):
1. The idea for a bauxite project there was/is probably right
2. Part of the expected supply gap for bauxite will be filled by Rio's project (-> bad for prices)
3. But production of the MLM project might start about 2 years earlier
4. I didn't find any numbers of planned CapEx for the MLM project except from a Breakaway Research report dated from Feb 2015. This one at least suggests that MLM might have much less CapEx per Mt/a capacity than Rio
5. There might be plenty of opportunities for deals of all sorts with Rio
