I think it's a little unfair to describe it as a routine. The 'perilously close' comment was a number of years ago and was a 'one off'. There have certainly been some disappointments but it's a bit of a stretch to blame ADO for BBI. Also who could have thought that Philip's recalcitrant behaviour would have gone on for so long.
ADO had little choice in informing the market about these possible deals and if they hadn't then I can imagine the justified criticism from all and sundry. There may have been a certain naivete attributable to ADO in dealing with large corporations but I can't see over promising and under delivering. Perhaps, some of our expectations were unrealistic, mine included.
