I am not sure about the reality of the situation when a bank appears as a major shareholder. You might find that the real shareholders are superannuation funds run by the banks, so any financial loss is carried by the fund members. Banks may also show up as shareholders when they merely hold shares as security for margin lending. Someone more clued-up than I am may be kind enough to shed light on this topic.

You are right about Super funds ! If one checks the list of Shareholders , of Resource Companys The Biggest holders are Super funds ,both private and Listed !!
