Example:

If you placed an order that was filled today you would have 3 days from which to settle. If you day traded that stock for the 3 days from placing order and sold in that window, you would either realize any profit during that window, or settle the order. If you made a loss you would have to wear that loss and sell before the 3 days is up, or hold but still have the cash to settle the order.
You are basically gambling or some what asking for trouble if you don't have the cash to settle the trade in the first place.
