jcoure, that article is bizarre to say the least. And to use this as an argument to suggest BHP might move its HQ is even more extraordinary, in my opinion.
)We are talking about a move from 69 to 88 rapes a year reported. Any number is a bad number, but is an increase of 19 in the number a large enough actual change to draw statistical conclusions? I dont think so.
)Women in Australia do not and never have been prominent owners of guns for protection. To say that sexual assaults have gone up because women have not been afforded the protection of a firearm is totally off the mark. What about social media (stalking), porn, violent TV and films as a reason, IF you had to find one, or simply the fact that there has been a population increase.
)To prove my point about female gun ownership, another slide in that article suggests that the rate of suicide by males using a firearm has fallen from 7 per 100,000 to 1 per 100,000 whilst the female equivalent hasnt moved from less than 0.5 per 100,000. It makes sense when you realize that the predominently male sector of society were the ones who had the guns and handed them in.
)What has this got to do with BHP??? Australian gun related crime has halved in the last 20 years, and that is a huge success by any count. To suggest that BHP might want to move their HQ to another country, with a good fiscal regime, less gun related crime, and safe sovereign status, because of some very average stats that really dont tell the whole story and which, frankly, are statistically negligible compared to say, the US, is not correct, and certainly wouldnt be in BHP's thinking at all, IMO.
