Maybe I have it wrong but I think of it as them having more than one trading account. One that they do all their shorting and another where they do their accumulating.
You can buy back directly on the market or you could return the loaned shares from any other trading account "you own".
So if you have accumulated a lot of shares cheaply you can do a transfer at any time without having to buy back on the market when prices inflate.
That's the way I would do it to prevent getting burnt. Does that make sense?
