Opposition Leader Kim Beazley says he wants to scr*ap Labor's no new uranium mines policy.
The long-standing policy has been the subject of intense debate within Labor circles, with resources spokesman Martin Ferguson arguing for it to go but environment spokesman Anthony Albanese calling for it to be retained.
The ALP adopted its three mines policy in 1984 to confine uranium production to Ranger, Nabarlek and Olympic Dam mines. Mr Beazley will formally announce the policy U-turn in a speech to the Sydney Institute.
He says he will seek a change to Labor's platform at next year's national conference to replace the no new mines policy with a new approach based on the world's strongest export safeguards.
