Turnbull's speech described a massive change in approach whereby HIS government will work WITH Aborigines instead of doing things TO Aborigines.

Turnbull described how funding would strategically target ares of greatest need. He indicated that the manner in which the criminal justice system is failing Aborigines would be reviewed with a view to improved outcomes for all Aborigines and therefore Australia as a whole.

But more than anything else, Turnbull's speech was a watershed in demonstrating RESPECT for Aborigines that has been conspicuously absent since John Howard's military intervention. Turnbull indicated that his government will seek the rightful recognition of Aborigines in the Constitution by working WITH them.

Deeply concerning to me is that video coverage of the applause for Turnbull's speech showed that Tony Abbott appeared NOT to applaud Turnbull's it at all. Indeed, Bill Shorten noted that Abbott left the Chamber afterwards [IMO, apparently boycotting Shorten's response].
