A site like www.tradingroom.com.au usually has stats like that, and for BHP it says 3.495 billion shares on issue... but for BHP it's only half the story, as BHP is a dual-listed entity with a further 2.6 billion shares on issue in the UK. This statistic is harder to find but if you go through old BHP announcements going back to the merger you'll find it.
