If only we could hear something like this from pyc. At this stage they seem too busy trying to get a grant from the uk competition.. …. i see things like this and again wonder why it is taking so long.

Andrew, perhaps they are “busy trying to get a grant from the uk competition” (and that is only our speculation) because progress like that achieved at the Fred Hutchinson CRC requires funding. Lots of funding.

The Hutch’s 2014 budget was $435 million. Over $300 million came from grants and contracts. Then there were substantial donations to boost that further. One benefactor alone provided $20 million early last year.

Contrast that with PYC. When they managed to raise $10 million last year they described it as an “unprecedented capital runway to drive our development program for the next three years.”

As for why “it is taking so long” – although this particular leukemia trial commenced in 2013, Professor Riddell has been reportedly working towards this for 25 years. And it’s still early days. In Riddell’s words, “much more work is required”.
