My underlying fear was.. why would patients subject themselves through a clinical trial when there is already a cure out there. My suspicious is that candidates withdrew and they had no choice but to shut the trial down.

A CR wasn't explicitly announced but it would have scared already shocked investors. They said they needed funding to pursue the clinical trials which will be next year. That funding may be provided by a partner.
