Hi Hotazel,
I can tell you exactly where I got confused. When first I pressed 'reply with quote' I went and deleted the quote (to avoid clutter) but this then removes the reference. I have learned how it works now, but yes I agree with your points about the interface. Being in software, I would not go so far as to call it clunky because there are some good features.
