I'm sure that gene therapy has a place, and RNAi also, though the applications may be more limited than is widely hoped. Rare genetic diseases are probably the most likely area of use. 30 odd years of gene therapy research, however, hasn't set the world on fire. Biological drugs and bowel flora manipulation I suspect will have a far greater impact on medicine in the medium term. After all, we are mostly gut bacteria surrounded by a few human cells.
