The Health and Social Services Access Card will use smart card technology to improve access to, and delivery of-health and social services benefits for Australians. Replacing 17 health and social services cards (including the Medicare card, Health Care cards and Veteran cards) , the proposed smart card will be a key component in combating fraud, which is a multi-billion dollar problem in Australia.

The Federal government has allocated 1.09 Billion dollars over the next four years with further projected allocations of 3 Billion dollars over the next 10 years for the implementation of the Health and Social Services Access Card.
